The release of Michael Steele’s book this week apparently came as a shock to Republican congressional leaders, who say they were never told about the book and had no input in its contents, having since been told they have “no control” over Steele’s controversial comments while promoting the book. “The book came out and everybody went, ‘Whoa, what happened,’” said an anonymous aide, and another source told the Washington Post that high-ranking Republicans are “not thrilled” by the surprise. In spite of requests from Republican aides to “get him to stop,” Steele began appearing on television this week to promote Right Now: A 12-Step Program for Defeating the Obama Agenda, which details his plan for defeating Democrats in the 2010 midterm elections. RNC spokesmen say that the book is a separate project from his job as party chairman.
