London art dealer Steve Lazarides has made a name, and a big profit, selling street art by Bansky, Faile, and other street-smart kids from around the world to celebrities and wealthy collectors, including the artist Damien Hirst. Born in Bristol, Lazarides was drawn into the graffiti art world when he was picture editor for the magazine Sleazenation. The magazine printed a Bansky poster and Lazarides the middleman for the sales of the anonymous artist’s work. As Bansky and other street artist’s fan base grew, Lazarides profited. However, even street art is not immune to the credit crunch, nor does it lack its share of detractors.
