First comes Craigslist, then comes HIV. According to a study from researchers at the University of Minnesota and New York University, after Craigslist arrives in a city, HIV transmission rates increase by 15.9 percent, thanks to sex sold through personal ads. This contributes to a total of 6,000 cases of HIV and $65.3 million in treatment costs connected to Craigslist transactions each year. The study analyzed data between 1999 and 2008 in 33 states.
