The scientific community has been buzzing about the possible discovery of the long-awaited Higgs boson subatomic particle—also known as “God’s particle.” If the rumors of discovery are true, it would be huge for physics—physicists have long believed the Higgs boson bestows mass on all other particles, but they have never been able to prove its existence. The rumor of its discovery is based on what appears to be a leaked internal memo from physicists at the Large Hadron Collider, a particle accelerator near Geneva, Switzerland. An anonymous commenter on Columbia University mathematician Peter Woit’s blog, Not Even Wrong, posted an abstract of the memo, but some physicists say it could be a hoax or even just plain bad science. Still, physicist Sheldon Stone of Syracuse University admitted “if it were to be real, it would be really exciting.”
