The Taliban declared responsibility Thursday for an attack on a Kabul hotel that left 14 people dead and at least five people injured, including a U.S. citizen. Two suspected gunmen, who police said were shot before they could carry out a suicide attack, entered the Palace Park Hotel reportedly seeking out foreigners room by room. “The attack was planned carefully to target the party in which important people and Americans were attending,” the Taliban said in a statement. The siege lasted five hours before Afghan police entered the building and rescued more than 50 people at a party in the hotel garden.
