Early Saturday morning in San Diego's Gaslamp District, an Emerald Cab taxi driver veered off the street and into a large group of people in front of the popular Stingaree nightclub. Twenty-five people were injured in the crash, six of whom remain in critical condition—including one woman whose leg was amputated below the knee. Investigators are trying to figure out what caused the driver to drift off the road at 15 mph into a crowd of people, but neither the police nor the owner of the club have reason to think the crash was deliberate, and police declared he was not under the influence of alcohol. The driver, whose name has not been disclosed, was taken to the hospital with a broken nose. A district police lieutenant reported officers were concerned the car contained explosives when they saw a bag with wires coming out of it on the seat of the taxi, but the wired device was later revealed to be a massager.
