Mike McLelland, the Kaufman, Texas, D.A. who was shot along with his wife in his home Saturday, had been on a public mission to hunt down the “scum” that had assassinated his deputy just two months earlier. “I hope that the people that did this are watching, because we are very confident that we’re going to find you,” said McLelland, a former Army officer who carried a gun, at a news conference following his deputy’s death. “We’re going to pull you out of whatever hole you’re in. We’re going to bring you back and let the people of Kaufman County prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law.” The deputy’s case had not been solved when McLelland and his wife were killed this weekend. Authorities are not ready to determine whether the two prosecutors’ deaths were related.
