Senate Republicans are in the news on Tuesday for filibustering the defense appropriation bill that would have repealed Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. But another important law went down with it too: The DREAM Act, which would offer temporary residence to college-bound illegal immigrants who were brought to the United States as children and went on to graduate from high school. It then offers a path to legal permanent status if they attend college or serve in the military. In Politico, Laurene Powell Jobs and Carlos Watson say why it should have passed: “America can’t afford to let this human capital go to waste. These young people could be working, innovating and creating small businesses. They could be paying taxes and spending their wages in their communities—instead of costing taxpayers money in government services.”
