More than 50 media companies—Newsweek and The Daily Beast included—have signed a letter of protest to Attorney General Eric Holder and Deputy Attorney General James M. Cole urging stronger protection for reporters and their sources. The letter, written by the D.C. journalism nonprofit the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, was sent in response to the revelation that the Department of Justice had secretly seized two months’ worth of Associated Press phone records. The committee demands that the phone records be returned to the AP and that the DOJ offer some sort of explanation as to how it “overreached so egregiously in this matter.”
