Judge Merrick Garland, US President Barack Obama's pick for the next Supreme Court justice waits for a meeting with Senator Robert P. Casey Jr. (D-PA) on Capitol Hill March 22, 2016 in Washington, DC.
Senate Republicans have been adamant that they will not hold a hearing and a vote on the nomination of Judge Merrick Garland, insisting that the decision should be taken by Obama's successor, who will not take office until January. Obama on March 16 announced his choice of Garland, a 63-year-old centrist judge to replace the US high court seat left vacant by the death last month of justice Antonin Scalia. / AFP / Brendan Smialowski (Photo credit should read BRENDAN SMIALOWSKI/AFP/Getty Images) Brendan Smialowski/AFP/Getty
