The alleged leader of one of Mexico?s most notorious gangs has been captured trying to flee the country.

Melissa Margarita Calderon Ojeda, who is known by the nickname of La China (The Chinese), was captured at Cabo San Lucas aerodrome in the west Mexican state of Baja California.

The 30-year-old, who is a suspect in nine murders in La Paz and up to another 180 violent incidents, was captured wearing a wig and glasses as she attempted to board a flight.

Her dramatic arrest was confirmed by Alvara de la Pena, the head of the Secretary General who said she was being held at the Centre for Social Reintegration in La Paz, which is also in the state of Baja California.

Ojeda, who is feared in the underworld, got her nickname La China after singer Javier Rosas wrote a song about the life of a woman who is involved in drug trafficking and criminal gangs.

She is the alleged head of a lawless group called Los Damaso who used to work with another gang leader, Damaso Lopey Nunez.

La China?s boyfriend, Pedro Hector Gomez Camarena, had already been arrested by police and military forces after a siege during an earlier operation in La Paz in June.
