Kismayo, Somalia is pictured on September 28, 2012. The Kenyan Defence Force (KDF) claim to have taken the southern Somali port city of Kismayo, the last stronghold of the Al-Qaeda linked Shebab, but the African Union forces said operations were still ongoing. Residents of the town have claimed to hear fighting taking place 5 km from the town and extremist group Al-Shebab have released a statement denying the KDF's claims. Kismayo is the last major bastion of the Shebab, who have lost most of their other strongholds to the 17,000-strong African Union force, of which Kenya is a part, as well as allied Ethiopian forces. The KDF have been aiming to take Kismayo ever since they rolled troops and tanks across the border to fight the Islamist extremists almost a year ago.
