President Trump said Monday that “illegal immigrants” who can “no longer be legally held” will be sent to sanctuary cities and states, after floating it as a possibility late last week. “Those Illegal Immigrants who can no longer be legally held (Congress must fix the laws and loopholes) will be, subject to Homeland Security, given to Sanctuary Cities and States!” the president tweeted. The move has been widely described as an attempt to bait the leaders of sanctuary cities, places where local authorities have refused to turn undocumented immigrants over to Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. But many officials in sanctuary cities have pushed back, saying they’d welcome the chance to help undocumented immigrants who are currently being detained.
