The FBI and Southern California police are investigating possible hates crimes in the city of Hawthorne, where two mosques were defaced Sunday. Early-morning worshippers at the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Baitus-Salaam Mosque discovered graffiti on the outside wall with the word “Jesus” spray-painted in white on the fence. Members called the police when they found what appeared to be a grenade inside. Officers later determined the grenade was plastic and didn’t pose a threat. The Islamic Center of Hawthorne was also targeted Sunday, with the words “Jesus is the way” scrawled on the building. The vandalism comes two days after a mosque was set on fire in Coachella.
