Alfredo Prieto, an inmate on Virginia’s death row who claimed he was intellectually disabled, was executed by lethal injection Thursday. The 49-year-old argued his alleged disability should prevent the state from putting him to death, but a federal appeals court upheld his sentence in June and the Supreme Court denied his appeal Thursday. The El Salvador native was sentenced to death in Virginia in 2010 for the rape and murder of a 22-year-old woman and the killing of her boyfriend more than two decades earlier. Prieto was on death row in California for the rape and murder of a 15-year-old-girl at the time. He reportedly thanked his lawyers and family members before mumbling, “Get this over with.”
