Police are trying to figure out why the 22-year-old Ross Truett Ashley shot a Virginia Tech police officer before turning the gun on himself. Ashley is suspected of walking into a real-estate office in Radford with a gun and demanding the keys to a Mercedes SUV, which was later found on Virginia Tech's campus. But other than that incident, Ashley had a good record: he was a running back on his high-school football team and won numerous academic awards; he enrolled in the University of Virginia after graduation and made the dean's list. Police believe he acted alone.
