Largely unknown? I think not. The dangers of texting have been headline news for a long time. What people just can't seem to understand is that talking on a cell phone is far more dangerous.
It's not that taking your eyes off the road momentarily is the issue. It's that the same part of your brain required for concentration while driving is required to make sense of verbal communication with a person who is not physically present.
Try this: Go to the grocery store with a list of 20 or so items, and see how long it takes you if you stay on your cell phone.
Oh, and hands-free devices help very little.

Vehicles kill more people every year - more than guns, medical mistakes, disease, more than anything else. More than many things combined.

Should be mandatory viewing for anyone who drives a vehicle on a public roadway.

People never learn from another s mistake. We just have to keep on reminding the public that TEXTING & TALKING ON THE PHONE WHILE DRIVING IS NOT ACCEPTABLE ....I will definitely fwd this video clip to all I know - perhaps such videos should be shown to all learner drivers. Then again people learn from seeing others as well.
