Rep. King Slams King of Pop
Not everyone is celebrating the life of Michael Jackson. In this YouTube video, Rep. Peter King criticizes coverage of Jackson's death saying that society is "glorifying" a "low-life."

That's why you will never become a Senator of the United States.
Show your true colors and tell me if you are not a low-life.
I know you miss the days when you and your kind use to judge people, convict them and hang them without trial.
The GOP keeps forgetting that America is getting more and more in touch with their better ideals.

Do you have a sound mind? Do you tell me that, this guy did not bring glory to America? Your constituents should be really worry about you.

With the same assumptions that you have, to find people by perception, I will say that you are a corrupt politician trying to get elected on division. That you take kick backs and that there should be a probe on your activities and let's see what transpires.
I believe you will be found GUILTY.

The news channels have been looking for something to make up for low ratings after the election. The dustup over Michael Jackson's death was a perfect sop for this.

Sadly, the best thing to do right now is to say nothing.

I would say Michael Jackson was George from John Steinbeck's novel Of Mice and men. And while everybody deserves to be seen in their better moment's at their funeral Micheal Jackson the "king of pop" and arguably the third most influential artist in music history is going to be remebered as "Wacko Jacko", and I'm sad to say thats how he deserves to be remembered.

Saw a wonderful comment about Michael Jackson and his funeral...

The Reverend Al Sharpton is calling for a US postage stamp honoring Michael Jackson -- as well as a national day of mourning for the late pop star.

Meanwhile it is being reported that Mr. Jackson will be buried without his brain -- apparently in a move to stand in solidarity with all of the people who will watch the memorial service live on ABC, NBC, CNN, and MSNBC.

If this guy doesn't understand why the whole world mourns the loss of MJ, it just proves how out of touch he really is. Society will always value brilliant artists and performers at a much higher level than soldiers, cops and firefighters. It may not seem fair to him, but blaming "the media" just makes him sound like another wingnut loon. Of course there was a media frenzy-- but there was also a legitimate, global response to MJ's death. Hard to "drum up" something like that.

The coverage is ridiculous. I have stopped watching TV news completely (at least for now) because they can't seem to devote 15 minutes of continuous news coverage to actual news without doing some sort of asinine Michael Jackson segment.

Peter King is less than eloquent, but he's not insane. His commentary is obviously well over the top - Michael Jackson obviously accomplished a lot more than "some singing and some dancing" by any measure.

But the essential point is valid. There are real and unpleasant truths that are being glossed over in the wake of his unexpected death. It's appropriate to focus on the positives in the immediate wake of death, but longer term it is also appropriate to acknowledge the sincere ambivalence many people feel towards the man as a man. He may well have been a pedophile - He paid a $20M civil settlement based on allegations he was. His many surgeries run contrary to his message that we should focus on our inner beauty. His business dealings didn't all add up, and there are many that have argued for years that they have not received the treatment or consideration they were promised.

Now is the time for grandstanding on both sides. Michael's (his)tory should ultimately be based upon more than simple adulation or condemnation.

Felt the same way after watching this.
Michael Jackson was a tragically-flawed, tortured, yet immensely gifted man, So his legacy is a complicated thing. It should be no wonder that most of us onlookers feel a great deal of ambivalence about him.

He may have expressed it inelegantly, but King is absolutely correct.

The scale of the accolade for Jackson with so litle comment on his unworthiness-- i.e. the immense payoffs he had to make to the families of children he molested.

In a just and civilized society, a modest acknowledgement of his commercial and creative success would be made. And then he would be privately buried with little attention, unless it be disdainful.

this lionization is entirely unseemly.

This guy is completely clueless.

We do not "worship" ordinary, middle class people doing ordinary, middle class things.

We worship movie and music icons and sports icons. That's who we are. It is the world we created. Let that sink in.

This guy has probably spent a lifetime worshipping at the alter of professional sports, with its countless demi-god sports heros. Multi-millionaires running around playing games.

Pete King is not a pop music / pop culture kind of guy, obviously. So he's ripped off that there's so much MJ attention. And he is capitalizing on the MJ attention to garner attention for himself.

Get over it, Pete. Go fetch a beer watch a game. It'll all pass. In the grand scheme of things, it'll be a few weeks in the summer of MJ making news. It'll quiet down.

"We do not "worship" ordinary, middle class people doing ordinary, middle class things."

he is saying that instead of giving all this time to MJ the media should focus on the soldiers dieing over seas, or the Coup a few miles south of us. or what about the fiasco going on in the GOP.

and you know what. Farrah Fawcett died too, he got 1 day of headlines, and even that was riddled with MJ.

just reading your response to this post leads me to believe your the kind of person who watches entertainment tonight for your news.

POPULAR CULTURE IS NOT CURRENT EVENT

Hello Charlemagne712,

The minute Michael Jackson's death stole headlines and attention from unrest in Iran, it became current event.

The media focusses on what the public wants to see, read and hear. Focussing on "soldiers dying over seas" (7 US soldiers in Afghanistan today, for example) is not what interests the public. It just isn't. And it's not Michael Jackson's fault either. It's our fault.

Did you know that during the US presidential elections last year, Britney Spears embarrassing personal trauma was actually the most sought story by readers surfing legitimate news outlets on the internet. I didn't get that from watching Entertainment Tonight because I don't have a television. I found out by researching it on the internet.

And it's very easy to know what our interests as a culture are. Ask any news outlet how they judge why they post what they do they'll tell you that it's as simple as seeing what links get clicked on their sites. There you have it. Michael Jackson leads the news because that's what we said is important. We told them by clicking. And clicking on the link that lead here told TDB that we're interested in discussing Michael Jackson. The good, bad and ugly. And commenting on the subject is a real indicator that there's interest.

I guess I'll now go search for that clue you said I need to get.

OH! This just in... I found a clue!

As I clicked away from this site, I landed on my RSS reader and read that 2 more Canadian soldiers died fighting along side US soldiers in Afghanistan today. That brings 3 Canadian fatalities today over seas.

That wasn't on Entertainment Tonight. Because I don't have a television. You're a bad judge of character. Some advice to you, Charlemagne712, would be to not judge people by reading one comment.

Hey, can you go get a clue now?

i bet that Michael Jacksonhas done more to contribute to humanitarian services thanyou on your best day .So Peter King do your homework before you start deciding who should be or not be honored.thouands of people say you are wrong, that is indicative of the size of the celebration of his life by so many. how many would you bring out, when your time comes
