The apocalypse appears to have been averted, but Iceland’s most active volcano did erupt Saturday. The eruption sent a white plume 18,000 feet into the air and was followed by 50 small earthquakes, the largest measuring a magnitude 3.7. The Grimsvotn volcano is located underneath Iceland’s Vatnajokull glacier. Iceland is one of the world’s most volcanically active countries and eruptions occur frequently, though they rarely cause deaths. In 2010, the Eyjafjallajokul eruption stranded millions of air travelers when wind pushed the resulting ash cloud into busy airspace; most northern European countries grounded planes for five days. Scientists do not expect this eruption to have the same impact on air travel.
