After 18 years behind bars, the so-called West Memphis Three are free Friday after an Arkansas judge accepted a plea deal from the men. Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley Jr. were convicted of murdering three 8-year-old boys in a 1993 case, but they’ve maintained their innocence throughout. Lawyers representing them reached a deal that allowed them to continue denying guilt while acknowledging that prosecutors have the evidence to convict them. A court last year ordered a new hearing after analyses of evidence found that none of their DNA was found at the crime scene. There were also allegations of juror misconduct.
