What do luxury brands do when luxury suddenly becomes unfashionable? They design on the cheap. At least that’s the strategy of several designers who are now creating budget collections for big chains, like Thakoon for Target, and Matthew Williamson for H&M. The Wall Street Journal surveys the discount designer duds, concluding that Thakoon’s cheap line stayed true to his vision despite the low-quality threads, but that another new line, Comme des Garçons for H&M, missed the mark.
