Twelve states headed to the polls for primaries and runoffs Tuesday night. In California, Jerry Brown will face Meg Whitman in the battle for governor. Barbara Boxer handily claimed the Democratic party's nomination for Senator, and Carly Fiorina will be her GOP competitor. Harry Reid of Nevada easily held on to his Senate seat, as Republicans sought a suitable challenger in a close three-way race. Reid's son, Rory, will join his father on Nevada's ballot, having won the state's gubernatorial Democratic primary. In a crowded candidate field in Maine, Libby Mitchell and Paul LePage emerged as the Democratic and Republican candidates, respectively, who will fight it out for governor. In the first count of the night, Virginia State Senator Robert Hurt won the Republican nomination for the fifth district House seat, and will be pitted against vulnerable Democrat freshman incumbent Tom Perriello.
