Kate and William were in Belgium today to mark 100 years since the outbreak of World War I.

Kate wore an Alexander McQueen cream coat dress for the ceremony, also attended by President Hollande of France, at which she was guest of honour.

In a speech, William paid tribute to the current unity of Europe before thanking the Belgian people for their resistance to the invasion 100 years ago.

He also spoke of Germany, saying, 'We were enemies more than once in the last century. Today we are friends and allies.'

In London, a sea of ceramic poppies were released from the Tower of London to mark the date.

This was the royal's last engaement for a while - William and Kate are taking the rest of August off, spending the month at Balmoral in Scotland.
