Yes, really: Campbell’s Soup is trying to beat back a boycott of its products by right-wing activists who are offended that a Canadian subsidiary of the company is offering a line of halal soups—meaning they meet Islamic dietary specifications. The soups first appeared in January, but wingnut bloggers didn’t catch wind of them until earlier this month, when anti-Islam blogger Pamela Geller began pushing for the boycott. (Her American readers are unlikely to have ever come across the soup cans, as they’re not available in the U.S.) The can’s label has Arabic lettering, written in steam from the simmering soup. Geller says she merely objects to the soup being certified halal by the Islamic Society of North America, which the government suspected had ties to Hamas in 2007.
