Saudi Arabia Eases Women’s Bicycle Restrictions

Women will be allowed to ride bikes in recreational areas and parks.

Saudi Arabia will relax its restrictions on women’s bicycling, newspaper al-Yawm reported on Monday, allowing women for the first time to ride motorbikes and bicycles in restricted areas, including recreational areas and parks. Women are banned from driving in Saudi Arabia, as well as riding motorbikes and bicycles in public areas. The unnamed official said the new law will not allow women to use bikes as transportations but rather “only for entertainment” and they should avoid areas where young men gather so women can “avoid harassment.”
