White House Takes Catholic Birth-Control Case to Court

To block subpoena from Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York.

Oh boy, the Obama administration and anti-birth control advocates are fighting again. The White House filed a lawsuit against the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York on Thursday after the archdiocese sought to subpoena the White House to get documents about the requirement for insurance to cover birth control. The administration claims the subpoena would be burdensome to fulfill and that civil subpoenas of the executive office are generally inappropriate. The archdiocese, which teaches against artificial birth control, claims that it stands to lose nearly $200 million per year in penalties if it refuses to comply with the insurance requirement. The subpoena is just the latest in a series of attempts by anti-birth control activists to block the requirement.
