Anonymous Threatens to Unmask Rehtaeh Parsons’s Bullies

The 17-year-old girl killed herself after being raped and tormented in school.

The hacking group Anonymous has threatened to unmask the bullies who tormented 17-year-old Rehtaeh Parsons, a Canadian girl who killed herself earlier this week. Parsons had allegedly been raped when she was 15 years old, and a photo of the attack was circulated around school—and the bullying and tormenting became so intense that she eventually moved and switched schools. Last week her parents found her hanging unconscious, and they took her off life support on Sunday. In a post on their Twitter feed called “Operation Justice for Rehtaeh,” Anonymous says it knows two of the suspected culprits, and they are working to confirm the identity of the third before exposing their names on the Internet. Anonymous is also calling for a protest outside the Royal Canadian Mounted Police headquarters in Halifax, near where the teen lived. A separate online petition for a protest has already gathered 65,000 signatures. Many have questioned whether police did enough to help the teen after the November 2011 rape, especially since the police said there was not enough evidence to prosecute the suspects.
