As the first pick in Monday’s WNBA draft, former Baylor University basketball star Brittney Griner knows she’s going to be a role model—and it’s a job she takes very seriously. Griner openly discussed being gay in interviews with the Associated Press and Sports Illustrated on Wednesday, matter of factly acknowledging that she’s a lesbian and saying that she hopes to work with kids who are bullied because of their sexuality. “Just be who you are,” she said. “Don’t worry about what other people are going to say, because they’re always going to say something, but, if you’re just true to yourself, let that shine through. Don’t hide who you really are.”
