The BBC has announced that Marin Alsop will be carrying the conductor’s baton for the final night of its summer music series, the Henry Wood Promenade Concerts, known as Proms. She is the first woman in the program’s 119 years to hold that distinction. Currently the music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and the principal conductor at the São Paolo State Symphony Orchestra, Alsop was recently featured as one of Newsweek’s 150 Women of Impact. The series runs eight weeks, from July 12 to September 7, when Alsop will conduct works by Handel, Wagner, Britten, and many others. The BBC has stated on its website that the night will include “the sound of a glass ceiling being broken.” Metaphorically speaking, we hope.
The American conductor will be the first woman to head up the Last Night of the BBC’s summer concert season.
