Russian Court to Rule in Pussy Riot Case

One of the punk band’s members has asked for early release.

A Russian court on Friday will rule on whether one of the jailed Pussy Riot members is eligible for an early release from the two-year jail sentence the punk girl band was issued last year. Nadezhda Tolokonnikova has been in jail since last March, when the band was arrested after a protest against Russian President Vladimir Putin at a cathedral. Tolokonnikova and two other members of the band were sentenced to two years in prison after being convicted of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred. One of the women, Yekaterina Samutsevich, has had her sentence suspended. In her court appearance for an early release, Tolokonnikova wore a Soviet-style dark prison uniform and said the prison did not support her early release because she “didn’t repent.”
