NYPD Reminder: Don’t Arrest Topless Women

Oft-shirtless performer filed lawsuit against police.

You may want to shield your eyes. The New York City Police Department issued an official memo reminding officers that bare-breasted women cannot be cited for public lewdness or indecent exposure. This may be because of Holly Van Voast, a performer known for shedding her top, who filed a lawsuit Wednesday against the NYPD for repeated incidents where she said she was accosted by the police. In the suit, Voast says the last incident involved police carting her off to a mental institution. The state’s highest court ruled more than two decades ago that it is legal for both women and men to bare their chests in public for noncommercial activity. Well, summer is just around the corner.
