In India, Coerced Hysterectomies

One state stands out for needless operations on young women.

Andhra Pradesh, the fifth most populous state in India, has seen a remarkable increase in hysterectomies performed on women. Women’s eNews reports that of those ages 30 to 49, 31 percent are now undergoing early menopause because of the procedure, which often removes the ovaries in addition to the uterus. Why make such a dramatic choice to treat routine complaints like abdominal pain and discharge? Perhaps for population control. “Family planning doesn't care about the health of women,” said one doctor. “It's all about cutting the tubes.”
