She’s no Avery Jessup in 30 Rock, but in real life, Deborah Turness is just as good. NBC on Monday named Turness, the former editor of Britain’s ITV News, as chief of the news division. She will be replacing Steve Capus, who resigned earlier this year. Turness comes to NBC News at a time of great tumult—the former prize of the news division, Today, has slipped in the ratings as anchor Matt Lauer’s star has dimmed. NBC’s Nightly News is still the top-ranked news broadcast, but anchor Brian Williams suffered a setback when his newsmagazine show, Rock Center, was abruptly canceled earlier this month. Turness, who had worked with NBC in a partnership with ITV, called the job “the greatest imaginable honor.” She will start in August.
