Single Chinese Moms May Be Fined

Wuhan city government may charge hefty fees for unmarried mothers.

Chinese media reported Monday that the city of Wuhan is considering legislation that would charge “social compensation fees” for unmarried mothers or women who've had a child with a married man. This plan comes just a few days after a newborn was rescued from a sewage pipe in Zhejiang providence. One Chinese demographer, He Yafu, believes the policy would lead to a rise in abortions and abandoned babies. Many bloggers have united in a fight to condemn Wuhan’s plans to punish single mothers.
