Turkish Women Hit the Streets

Half of demonstrators in growing protests are women

As the protests in Turkey continue to build, women are becoming ever more present at the demonstrations in Istanbul and across the country. Many of them say are there simply because they are women. One protestor says that Turkey's AKP government wants “women to stay home and not to be too visible in public life.” However, the women in the streets represent only part of Turkish society—the secular, liberal side. Many women are still very conservative, and are largely absent from high-level political positions. This is despite the fact that half of university professors are women, and several of Turkey's largest businesses are led by females.
