A Kuwaiti woman has been sentenced to 11 years in jail after allegedly making comments on Twitter that were deemed insulting toward the emir, Sheik Sabah al Ahmed al Sabah. Huda al Ajami is also accused of calling for regime change and insulting a religious sect. She has contested that she does not even have a Twitter account. This is the harshest verdict (and the first for a woman) since a crackdown on social media began in June 2012 throughout the Gulf in an attempt to quell the Arab Spring.
Alleged statements deemed offensive against leader.
