Morning-After Pill Plan Approved

Judge reluctantly allows Obama’s proposal.

Federal District Judge Edward Korman—in a move that made him clearly unhappy—approved a proposal by the Obama administration to make one morning-after birth control pill available over the counter without restrictions on age. However, the only product that will likely be widely available on shelves is the Plan B One-Step pill, produced by Teva Pharmaceuticals, which costs around $50. Korman wrote that this “confers a near-monopoly” that will limit the pill’s accessibility to poor women, and he urged the FDA to prevent Teva from gaining exclusivity on the market.
