Men Don’t Take Paternity Leave

Even when it’s offered to them.

Even if you’re not the one in the marriage who gave birth, you can take some time off too. Companies like Yahoo, Ernst & Young, and Bank of America all offer paid leaves for new fathers—but men aren’t taking them up on it. But why? It’s not because they don’t want to; rather, many companies still think work should come before family for men. Men don’t want to lose status at work, or they feel uncomfortable because of lingering stereotypes about the role of fathers in the family. Countries such as Sweden and Portugal require fathers to take leave, but the U.S. falls short, as a vast majority take only a week or two of leave, if any. It makes it a lot harder to lean in if the men aren’t helping out at all.
