GOP Modifies Abortion Bill

In wake of controversy about adding rape, incest exceptions.

Despite Rep. Trent Franks’s assertion last week that “the incidents of rape resulting in pregnancy are very low,” House GOP leaders modified his abortion bill banning the procedure after 20 weeks of pregnancy to exclude instances of rape or incest. Franks and other Republicans had been arguing against an amendment by Democrats which included the same language. According to the House website, “The modification allows an abortion to take place if the pregnancy is the result of rape, or the result of incest against a minor, if the rape or incest has been reported at any time prior to the abortion to appropriate enforcement authorities.”
