Transgender in Jordan

A new documentary tracks a tale of gender dysphoria in the Arab world.

It's hard enough to feel uncomfortable in your own skin in the U.S., but in Jordan, where LGBT discrimination is not outlawed, it can prove lethal. Filmmaker Maryam Jum'a discovered the story of Manal, who was molested by two male family members at a young age and later pressured into marrying a man who, though sympathetic to her history of abuse, did not fit into her vision of herself as a man. She divorced and spiraled into addiction and suicidal tendencies, leading to hospitalization. Jum'a hopes her film will generate sympathy for people like Manal and maybe even open a door for social reform.
