As sequestration’s reach has expanded across the country, women have felt a disproportionate amount of the hurt. Meals on Wheels has had to cut back home delivery to clients, the majority of whom are “women over 75 years old who live alone and have six or more health problems,” according to the organization’s chief of staff. Meanwhile, 526,000 victims of domestic violence will be deprived of access to services this year as shelters and intervention programs shutter without adequate funding. An additional 600,000 women and children will suffer from decreased access to food, nutrition, and breastfeeding support. Congress is expected to readdress the budget this fall.
Congress’s cuts have hurt elderly women, single moms, and victims of domestic violence.
