Six men received lifelong jail sentences Saturday for attacking and gang-raping a Swiss woman and her husband while they were on a long bike tour of India. The couple was on their way to the Taj Mahal in Agra when they were assaulted and robbed on March 15 in Madhya Pradesh state. The men, between the ages of 22-30, were from a nearby village, and one man was convicted of attacking and robbing the pair—not for rape. After the rape was brought to light, India passed stricter laws for rapists, including the death penalty. The incident came on the heels of the death of a 23-year-old woman who was gang-raped on a bus in Delhi, inciting protests throughout the country.
