In Zimbabwe, political activists are being targeted by their enemies with a new weapon—rape of their wives. What’s even worse, a majority of men whose wives were raped in politically motivated crimes usually divorced them once they found out, because women in Zimbabwe are traditionally accused of inviting rape upon themselves. “Rape has been used widely as political weapon,” said Talent Jumo, the coordinator at Katswe Sisterhood, a movement of women fighting for equal rights in Zimbabwe. “It’s the reason why most women shy away from participating in politics. They chose not to be active because once they are inside they will be subjected to all kinds of sexual abuse in order to get support to go high up in the ranks of politics in Zimbabwe.”
