Swedish Women Wear Hijabs After Assault

Attackers tried to rip hijab off Muslim woman.

After attackers tried to pull a hijab off a pregnant Muslim woman in a Stockholm suburb, women throughout the country are posting photos of themselves in the traditional headscarf in solidarity with the victim. The “hijab outcry” movement is lobbying the government to ensure that “Swedish Muslim women are guaranteed the right to ... religious freedom.” With the hashtag #hijabuppropet (#hijaboutcry in English), the protesters say they want to bring more attention to the “discrimination that affects Muslim women” in Sweden. Joining the protest were some more well-known faces as well: lawmakers Asa Romson and Veronica Palm posted photos, as did TV host Gina Dirawai.
