Indian Teen Delays Marriage, Becomes Journalist

She’s worked for a local news station and wants to launch her own paper.

Some girls in 16-year-old Khushboo Kumari’s area of India are married by the time they are 12. “It is one of the most backward and male-dominated states in the country and it is where almost 70 percent of child marriages occur,” she says in an article for Al Jazeera. But Khushboo is different. She’s worked for a local news station for five years, focusing on women’s rights, covering women who have endured harrowing marriages. But her father is in the process of finding her a husband already. Khushboo thinks she can defy her father’s expectations for a few more years, but she has a grander plan: to launch her own newspaper.
