For Somali-born activist and former model Waris Dirie, “female genital mutilation has nothing to do with religion, culture or tradition. It is a crime against innocent girls.” Dirie, who is herself a childhood victim of female circumcision, recently opened the Desert Flower Medical Center in Germany. The center will offer reconstructive surgery and psychological support for females who have been subjected to the operation. According to the United Nations World Health Organization, there are 150 million or so women who suffer from FGM worldwide. Dirie has plans to open centers in Africa, Asia, and Europe.
