A defense lawyer for a gang-rape case that incited protests around India has received serious criticism for comments he made when asked about premarital sex. A.P. Singh, a lawyer for two of the four men sentenced to death for the December rape of a 23-year-old student, said Friday, “If my daughter was having premarital sex and moving around at night with her boyfriend, I would have burnt her alive.” But now he’s saying that he prematurely blurted out an answer out of distress when the questioner kept egging him on. “I was specifically asked what I would do if my own daughter or sister had engaged in premarital sex,” Singh says. “There was no need to link my remarks to the gang-rape victim. I didn’t refer to her at all.”
