Iowa University Crowns Transgender Homecoming Queen

For the first time ever.

The University of Northern Iowa crowned its first ever transgendered homecoming queen this weekend. Steven Sanchez, 21, was born male but identifies as both male and female.  Sanchez, who was forced to drop out of high school because of relentless bullying, and is famous at UNI for his performances as “Lola.” He even performed two Selena Gomez songs as Lola as part of his bid for the homecoming crown. When his name was called Friday night at the homecoming dance, the crowd erupted in applause. “I never would have thought years ago that I’d be standing on a stage, people cheering for me because they’d voted me homecoming queen,” Sanchez said. “It was unbelievable.”
