A 13-year-old Pakistani girl was allegedly raped and buried alive in the Punjab province—and higher authorities were forced to intervene after local police ignored her family’s pleas for help. The girl was allegedly abducted and raped by two men whilst on her way to a religious lesson. Thinking she had died in the assault, they buried her near the roadside—but she regained consciousness and clawed her way out of the grave and appealed to a passerby for help. Local police have been criticized for being unhelpful, prompting the Lahore High Court Chief Justice Complaint Cell to launch an investigation Saturday and to direct police to arrest the alleged rapists.
Higher authorities intervene after local police are unresponsive.
