Pregnant Girls Rescued from Nigerian ‘Baby Factory’

Apparently not an uncommon problem in country.

Nigeria may be Africa’s biggest oil producer, but one woman is making a profit off of selling newborn babies. Nigerian police said Wednesday that they had raided a home in the city of Port Harcourt and arrested a woman allegedly harboring six pregnant girls, as young as 14, who told police they were being kept in the home to make babies to be sold to willing buyers. Human trafficking and the practice of selling newborns—baby boys can sell for about $250—is the third most common crime in Nigeria, where poverty is rampant and most of the country’s population lives on less than two dollars a day, according to the United Nations.
